Potential…Do You See It?

One of my latest custom orders was for another antique upholstered rocking chair for a mommy-to-be, and it needed some seat springs replaced.  (You can view my 3-step tutorial on how to reupholster a rocking chair here.)

I asked on Freecycle if anyone had any seat springs from an antique chair. I waited a day, but I had to get to started on the rocker, so went ahead and purchased new.  Having new springs was good, but I had to try to make them work with the framing that the chair currently had or else I would have to rebuild the whole bottom.

Wouldn’t you know that the next day (after I just spent a chunk of change on supplies to replace the springs), a nice lady replied to my request that she had a broken rocker that I could use for parts.  grrrr.

An old Morris rocker – solid oak with awesome turnings, adjustable back, horsehair cushions, and plenty of springs that were exactly the same size I had needed.  Not really fixable unless you replaced the entire frame that had been cracked and broken in various spots. Oh well.  I was super-happy to have it anyway because who knows when I’ll need parts, right?

Getting rid of something because it’s broken just doesn’t happen around here, and most people would ask, “Now what are you going to do with a broken rocking chair?”  Tsk.

Do you see the potential?  I don’t want to give away my ideas on reusing this beauty (not yet), but wanted you to think of what could be done with this chair….or it’s parts. Hmmmm.  Any repurposed ideas?

In addition to the freebie, my hubby has come along side the don’t-let-things-go-to-waste philosophy and he has scored almost a dozen of these absolutely fabulous solid pallets made of cherry.  Yes!  Cherry!  I die.

He gets a big smooch and I get the goods. Win – win, right?  Really though, he loves wood and respects it, so this was fun for him to begin to plan projects and dream – he’s a great woodworker.  How about you?  What would you do with them?  You can see my other trashure (trash into treasure) on this post.

We originally were going to use them to replace our counter tops, but since I found some solid oak doors junking instead, we are going to put the pallets to a different use…we think.  What would you use them for?
So, here’s some food for thought: Not only can something be functional as is, but what else could it be?  How about yourself, do you lack the foresight to see what you could be?  We all have glorious potential and just need to look at ourselves a little differently to get the head-smacking realization that takes us to a new level.  God has gifted us all and it’s just a matter of tapping into those gifts.
Go ahead.  Take a look at your potential and challenge yourself to think outside of your norm.  Did I think I would be a homeschooling mother to 6 children with a business and a blog?  Nope.  But, am very glad I am and that I took chances to be one.
Pin and inspire others!

UPDATE: I’ve made use of those springs, the arms, the rocker, and the base, just click on each word to see! The back and spindles are coming soon…
