Easy Peasy DIY Cloth Diaper Wipes

Screeeeech!  That’s the sound of the brakes being applied and our master bedroom makeover coming to a halt when our baby girl surprised us with an early arrival at 6 weeks ahead of due date.

Love those tootsies!!

We were so close to getting done, but haven’t touched it since early March.  Ah well, it will be completed soon enough, but we’ve decided to move it to the back burner and get our garden underway along with several other projects.

Here is a sneak peek of where we left off…

I really wholeheartedly believe I instinctively knew baby was coming and began to frantically prepare even though my due date was two months away.  Because of that, one of the things I was able to accomplish in time was making some cloth diaper wipes that we desperately needed. (5 previous baby bums can wear out such things!)

Yes, we cloth diaper and wouldn’t have it any other way!  Would you want to wear paper pants all day that have been made of processed chemicals causing who knows what irritations?  Not to mention the trash they produce.

Actually, my cloth diapers rarely leak and the disposables almost always allow a breastfed baby to blast out the back…nuff said.

You don’t have to strictly use cloth diapers to use cloth wipes, but either way your baby will appreciate the super-soft cleaning of a homemade wipe as opposed to a stiff (and wickedly frigid) disposable kind.

The wipes I have pictured are two-sided with one being flannel and the other micro-fleece and are serged together.  But really, all you need is micro fleece cut into squares if you want to skip any sewing steps and put them to use.

To make these easy peasy wipes (either one-sided or two), just grab yourself a thick piece of paper, like cardstock (or cardboard, a cereal box, etc.) and make an 8″ square.  Next, grab a bowl and create a rounded corner using the edge of the bowl. This step is optional, but I like a rounded corner for serging and appearance purposes.  Last, cut out with scissors or you can use a rotary cutter and mat like I did.  Viola!  You’re ready to use the fleece as is or read on for the two-sided version.

The benefit of the two sides, in my opinion, is that you get the chunky stuff off with one and clean up with the other.

So…for the two-sided version, I wanted a total of 16 wipes.  I cut 16 flannel squares and 16 fleece squares so that when they’re paired I end up with 16 total.  Make sense?

Then, either using a serger (I love mine!)or a zig-zag stitch on your sewing machine.  Just place the two fabrics wrong sides facing and stitch together.  What could be easier than that?

What a perfect gift to self and baby, or as a gift to a new mother.  You can even roll them up in a cupcake fashion and stick them in a cute box.

Do you love to get handmade gifts like I do?

Larissa looks at things with fresh eyes, she problem solves creatively, and I love how she uses her "stash" of valuable "junk" in the process.

What attracted me to Prodigal Pieces at first was the business name. What kept me interested is her opening up to share her life with her readers. She shares her beautiful creativity, has tutorials in her blog and takes what was old and makes it new again. I have several of her beautiful pieces decorating my home.
